PUBLICATION/UNIVERSAL INCLUSIVE DESIGN | gendom

I created a publication design depicting the effect different generational attributes have on each other. There’s a tendency towards creating divisions between generations regarding their issues and achievements. The attempt of this project was to portray all these attributes as holistic and universal, being interconnected and not as unrelated with one another. We’re developing as a human race, whether we’re bettering ourselves and our surroundings or worsening it — it’s entirely subjective with many layers to the subject, as each generation has their own distinct contributions.

This has made it the opportune project for doing primary research by asking the different age groups on this particular topic. I then used the information I got from participants and arranged it in a timeline regarding related events to their answers. This became the narrative with a clear layout of the publication. The different periods is used as section dividers for the timeline of events and figures. This chronological line of narrative is split up in three different dominos using the generations as indicators. This is a clear depiction of the ‘domino’-effect each generation has on each other.

The colour palette consist of a vibrant red and dark, corporate blue. These two colours are significantly contrasting to one another, alluding to the opposing generations. It also contributes to a more legible layout, as the reader can easily distinct the different design elements from each other. The minimal colour palette also lends it a retro look & feel which is ideal to recapture the different historic moments and figures.

The body copy is kerned in blocks aligned to its appropriate picture and heading. The line motif is used to organize the information, so that it’s more legible. I made use of three different typefaces appropriate to the timeframe of each generation - Courier for the Traditionalists & Baby Boomers, Helvetica for Generation X & Millennials, and Klavika for Generation Z.
